It’s been one of these days that I’ve been feeling full of resistance:
I didn’t feel like getting out of bed this morning. I woke up with a headache. I didn’t feel like eating breakfast and going to work. I didn’t dig the rainy, windy weather either. And even though my angel oracle this morning urged me to prioritize, write and be patient, I didn’t really feel like following this advice either.
I even found myself resisting this feeling of resistance, judging my laziness, tiredness and lack of motivation.
But there was a point where I decided to allow the resistance. To ask myself: “What am I resisting? And why?” And this simple decision to allow and inquire opened up something in me. Something started to wiggle and move, break free and flow again…
I decided to sit down and write about this act of allowing. (Okay angels, you were right again and in the end I did follow your advice ;)) I just started to write, without any plan or any idea what would come up. Right away a flood of bottled up energy started to pour out of me and onto the paper. I was hardly able to keep up writing down the words that wanted to break free! I felt a sense of relief, warmth and renewed energy wash over me.
That’s the power of creative expression. It allows us to voice our innermost feelings. Without creative outlets, our unidentified emotions often keep on bubbling and building up just underneath the surface as a grey, formless mass until this bubbling blob starts to clog up our entire inside.
Oftentimes, there’s no specific event triggering this build-up. It’s a subtle, gradual process that’s easily dismissed or overlooked – until it’s too late and you’re a sobbing, overwhelmed, anxious, irritated and exhausted mess.
That’s why it’s so important to express yourself regularly! Don’t wait until you’re about to explode (or actually exploding). Take the time to regularly “Take out the trash”, cleaning up your energy system, your emotional body and your subconscious mind.
You don’t have to know the why and the how, or even expect a specific result. Just express yourself in a way that feels safe to you. For me it’s writing, but it could also be painting, playing music, gardening, jewelry making, sewing, singing, dancing, baking or decorating your home. It’s the act of creating itself that provides a safe container for you to explore your emotions and allow them to flow freely.
It can be scary to express yourself freely in everyday life, with friends and family…but in a personal creative project, there’s no judgement, no need for approval, no expectations for a certain result. There’s some kind of healing magic happening while you’re creating something. That’s when you’re present in the moment and in the flow. It’s the safest, most effective and most fulfilling way to allow, listen to and process your innermost feelings.
